Hurley Pro gaat van start met mooie golven!

 Gisteren is de zevende stop van de ASP World tour van start gegaan, de Hurley Pro. Deze wordt gesurft bij de legendarische pointbreak van Lower Trestles.

Julian Wilson, die vorige week nog derde werd bij de New York Pro, liet gelijk zien wat hij in huis had en scoorde de hoogste single-wave score namelijk een 8.93 (van de 10), en gelijk ook het hoogste  heat-total een 17,60 (van de 20).

“This is my first World Tour event at Trestles and I’ve been looking forward to this my whole life,” vertelt een enthousiaste Julian Wilson “Those three-man heats, you want to get busy at the start because you can’t sit where you want to sit. You end up just scratching and that’s what happened in my heat. It’s a different strategy, kind of a dog fight, and you’ve got to make due with what you get.”

Owen Wright, die de New York Pro op zijn naam zette, had wat problemen in zijn heat maar wist op een super wijze terug te komen op zijn laatste golf.

“I had a bit of a battle out there,” legt Owen uit “I’m pretty happy to have made it through this first round because I haven’t won a Round 1 heat in awhile. I really had nothing going on for me coming into the last five minutes and that wave really didn’t offer much at all and I just had to milk it as much as I could. I just caught the score so I’m pretty wrapped.”

“Winning in New York was amazing, I’ve been working really hard to get a good result and it felt good to really got one. I just lapped it up and enjoyed the moment and now I’m here this week and feeling fully recovered from New York and I’m ready to go.”

De heat van de dag was misschien wel die van Kelly Slater, Rob Machado en Fred Patacchhia. Kelly Slater wist deze heat te winnen.

“Rob had the biggest wave in that heat and he was way inside and I just let him go where he wanted,” aldus Kelly Slater “He was looking left and started to go right and the left was good, but I was out of position and didn’t get it. That last set came in at the end and Rob said he was going to go right and that wave cleaned it up and I got the one behind it. It feels good to get the win. I was frustrated. I haven’t surfed since New York and was lucky to get the win.”
