Mooie swell bij Supertubos tijdens de Rip Curl Pro Portugal
Supertubos liet vandaag pas echt zien wat ze in huis had. In meer dan 10 uur tijd konden er 21 heats gesurft worden in mooie barrels van 2 tot 2.5 meter hoog. Er kon gesurft worden van ’s ochtends vroeg tot de zon onder ging. Dit kwam natuurlijk ten goede aan de surfers die nu echt alles uit de kast konden halen. En de jury had het er maar moeilijk mee met zoveel bijna perfecte scores.
Een mooi voorbeeld hiervan is de heat die ging tussen Julian Wilson en Kai Otten. Kai Otten wist in zijn eerste golf gelijk een 9.97 te scoren en versterkte hierna zijn score met een 8.43. In plaats van op te geven kwam Julian Wilson terug met een 9.43 en vlak hierna met een 9.70. En hij wist hiermee de heat te winnen.
“That was an amazing heat,” Aldus Julian Wilson. “My hat goes off to Otto (Kai Otton) as he was getting some ridiculous barrels and really put the pressure on me early. I’ve been watching the conditions all day long and have been trying not to froth out too hard, but they’re just so perfect. It’s truly Dream Tour stuff out there today.”
“I’ve been very confident in my surfing the past few events and I really feel like I belong at this level of competition,” Wilson said. “I felt like I was right there at the last event in France and I’m really keen to put up another result. The win is always the goal.”
Kelly Slater had in zijn heat later op de dag moeite met het getij maar wist alsnog te winnen en zo door te gaan naar de vierde ronde.
“There are still a lot of fun waves out there but the tide is definitely changing things up,” vertelt Kelly Slater. “My plan was to go out and catch a lot of waves and I actually made a little priority mistake in there. Dan (Ross) is one of those underrated guys. He’s a big guy so I knew he wouldn’t be taking the smaller waves and I knew he was capable of getting big scores.”
Met zijn overwinning is Kelly Slater weer een stap dichter bij zijn elfde ASP World Title. Maar hij blijft hier zelf nuchter onder.
“Counting Portugal, there are still three events left and a lot of points so it’s far from over. Obviously another result here would long ways towards it but there’re still quite a few guys remaining in the hunt that are still in the event so we’ll see how it all pans out.”
ASP rookie John John Florence wist de hoogste heat van het evenement op zijn naam te zetten met een 19.53 (van de 20).
“It’s unreal out there this morning,” Aldus John John. “It reminds me a lot of Backdoor and Pipe but with a sandy bottom. I was having so much fun. I just kept taking off on everything that came through.”
John John Florence zal het in de derde ronde opnemen tegen de nummer 2 Owen Wright.
“Owen (Wright) is good in pretty much any conditions,” Verklaard John John Florence. “We had a pretty close heat in Trestles and he beat me. I feel confident in these kinds of conditions though. So hopefully we have good waves for our heat.”
