North Reach – de nieuwe Performance Freeride kite

De teamriders van North kiteboarding zwerven over de hele wereld, voor foto’s en redactie op zoek naar de mooiste kitesurf-spots. Zo komen ze ook op de mooiste verlaten eilanden met, in het kader van ‘Travel Light’ het liefst zo weinig mogelijk gear. De wens van North Reach kwam in vervulling, Pat Goodman heeft nu een kite gemaakt die je overal mee naartoe kunt nemen. Eentje die je, volgens North, zou willen als je gestrand was op een onbewoond eiland. Pat Goodman ontwikkelde de meest veelzijdige kite die hij ooit heeft gecreëerd. de North Reach.

De North Reach

Stel je voor – sun-bleached sand, surf pounding on the outer reef, slicks on the inside and palms rustling in the tradewinds. Een stille speeltuin waar je één bent met de elementen.

Met de ervaring van veel kite avonturen en de kracht van Google’s satellieten, is het North kiteboarding team klaar om het ultieme onbewoonde eiland te vinden. Ze landde op de Filipijnen, met als doel om antwoord te vinden op de vraag;

‘If you could only pack one kite to take with you – anywhere and everywhere – what would it be?’

Het beste DNA van alle North kites

“Ik heb geprobeerd de magische combinatie te vinden, zodat je van elke discipline kunt genieten zonder een gespecialiseerde vlieger te hebben”, zegt Goodman. Volgens North combineert The Reach het beste DNA van elke North kite tot één ontwerp die tot alles in staat is.

“You hop on it and right away say ‘this thing’s a blast – I could do anything on this. I can go out in the surf; I can do a little bit of freestyle, land some kite loops and show off to my friends’.

De North Reach kan elke conditie aan

“If you look at the iconic Orbit, Pulse and Carve kites together, the Reach sits in the middle. The Reach will turn faster and have a tighter turning radius than the Orbit because it’s not as flat and open in the arc shape. It will also foil better than the Orbit, because it sits less forward in the window. Its profile is more powerful and draft forward than the Carve, so it has more upwind drive, and it will outperform the jumping and hangtime of the Carve. You’ll give up a little of the drift, but it’s still going to be fun in the waves.”

Goodman zegt dat de North Reach elke conditie aan kan; “You just don’t want to ride it super wound up, because the profiles are slightly fuller, which also means the kite will produce more bottom end power, so you can ride it smaller than usual. And in the larger sizes the Reach is a powerful lightwind kite. ”

“If you’re a serious wave rider, you would still use a Carve; and if you’re a serious booster, you’d still ride the Orbit; but if you’re unhooking with boots, you’ll ride the Pulse. But if you like to foil, ride some waves, jump and loop, this is your kite,” says Goodman.

Wat vinden Jalou en Nick van The Reach?

Terug naar de Filipijnen, de wind is gaan liggen en de zon gaat onder op het onbewoonde eiland. Jesse Richman, Jalou Langeree en Nick Jacobsen pakken hun gear in na een fantastische dag op het water.

Jalou Langeree wist niet precies wat ze moest verwachten; “ Toen ik the Reach in mijn handen had, voelde het alsof ik met deze kite al heel vaak gevaren had. Het voelde erg comfortabel, zeker in de condities die we in de Filipijnen hadden – van 10 tot 35 knopen, in grote golven en in plat water. Ik had nooit het gevoel dat the Reach me uit de golf trok, en the Reach stuurde perfect.”

Terwijl Nick Jacobsen zijn biertje opent, grijnst hij; ”The Reach is my desert island kite.”

North’s team verbleef bij Kingfisher Resort in Pagudpud en Kitesurf Mindoro in Bulalacao, rond de tijd dat de Filipijnen dubbel getroffen werd door tornado’s in december 2019.
