Rip Curl Pro Search San Francisco is begonnen
Cleane 1 tot 1.5 meter hoge golven kwamen binnen bij San Francisco, en hiermee kon de Rip Curl Pro Search San Francisco officieel van start gaan.

Kelly Slater, voormalig Rip Curl Pro Search winnaar, liet met een aantal turns en barrels zien dat hij ook dit jaar weer van plan is het evenement te winnen. Hij wist zijn heat dan ook te winnen met een score van 16.03.
“I’m stoked because I went out last night and the surf was tough, the waves were real flat and I had boots and gloves and a hood so that I could go back and feel more comfortable out there today with less rubber on,” Aldus Kelly Slater. “The conditions today were a lot more fun. The water is like Jbay and I thought it’d be colder, it’s probably upper 50’s and it’s not too bad.”
Dit evenement is tevens belangrijk voor Kelly Slater z’n strijd voor zijn elfde wereldtitel. Als hij negende wordt met dit evenement dan mag hij zich ook dit jaar weer ’s werelds beste surfer noemen.
“I’m going to try and just be relaxed about it because it’s a situation where you could feel tense in and want to get it over with it,” legt Kelly Slater uit. “The reality of it is the other guys have to win both events with my last heat win so the pressure is on them. I don’t feel like I can relax though because the guys now have to focus and that’s when they could do something magic. That’s how it goes in competition and I don’t doubt that that’s a possibility. It is close. I just need to catch four good waves in this event to win the title.”
Morgen is het alweer een jaar geleden dat Kelly Slater’s vriend en tevens rivaal Andy Irons overleed, en hij zal zijn elfde wereldtitel dan ook aan hem opdragen.
“The globe’s a cool trophy and if I happen to make it out of the next round I’ve love to win this contest. Tomorrow is the one year anniversary of Andy’s passing away and it’s going to be a sad and happy day in remembering him and if Ironically I can win the world title on that day it’d be secondary to the memory of Andy.”
Jordy Smith wist al snel zijn weg te vinden in de golven van San Francisco. Hij wist dan ook zijn heat te winnen en gaat door naar de derde ronde.
“I found a couple of little nuggets and got barreled,” vertelt Jordy Smith na zijn heat. “Dusty (Payne) was unfortunate and he said he saw a shark out there so that’s a bit unnerving. The waves can be pretty fun though. It reminds me a lot about waves at home around Cape Town.”
Zijn tegenstander Dusty Payne verlaat onverwachts het water 5 minuten voor het einde van zijn heat omdat hij een vin van een haai zag.
“I was sitting out there and saw something in the lineup,” legt Dusty Payne uit. “I’ve seen dolphins before and that wasn’t a dolphin. That’s the biggest fin I’ve ever seen in my life and it came straight for me. The waves are terrible so I just opted to stay in instead of deal with the shark.”
