Mathieu van der Poel in beeld – voorjaar 2024 in retrospectief

Zeven koersen. Vijf keer podium. Drie keer winst. Twee daarvan monumenten.

Gent-Wevelgem

Oh, I really enjoyed yesterday! Gent-Wevelgem was lovely. I remember this race last year, it was pouring rain, cold and grim. I like looking back at the photos I took, same race, a year’s difference, a year of learnings, how to shoot a bike race, editing, shooting, angles, improvements. That makes me happy. It was so phenomenally cool yesterday when I realized Laurence Pithie was in the lead group, not to mention with Mathieu van der Poel and Mads Pedersen. Next second he was attacking up the Kemmelberg, Mathieu battling to hold his wheel. That was wild. We boosted to the finish, crosswinds and high moto speeds turned my head into one of those bobblehead figurines you see at tourist shops, you know? Mads winning was good, always one of my favorites!

Flanders

Yesterday was nuts! Honestly one of the most enjoyable days I’ve ever had at a bike race, I’m so sleepy but so, so happy. Loose drama and rogue chaos in both the race and photographer peloton, feeling for everyone who took a L. We all kinda knew Mathieu van der Poel was gonna win but seeing him deleting everyone on the Koppenberg was wild. Powerful. I’ve never seen anything like it, literally only three riders rode up; everyone else walked, looking broken, destroyed, I couldn’t believe it. I remember driving away on the bike losing my mind. What on earth did I just shoot? Thank you to everyone who makes this happen, friends, clients, colleagues, it’s a privilege to be here and I’m super thankful! Oh and edit – my camera shit the bed at the finish and I was stuck in the scrum around Mathieu with only my 100-400 lens working, it was beyond funny, everyone trying to get closer and me further away.

Paris-Roubaix

History. Mathieu van der Poel winning Flanders last Sunday, Roubaix this Sunday, in the rainbow jersey, solo both times, that’s remarkable. It hasn’t really hit me yet what that could mean, how long it’ll be until it happens again, I don’t even know when it last happened, surely a long time ago? I always like shooting in the Roubaix velodrome. It was the first place I ever shot a bike race in Europe, in 2022. The first time I took the train, the second a car and today a motorbike, how fun. Honestly I find Roubaix kinda hard to shoot, I think I struggle shooting chaos, I want to get better at it, making it feel like it works in my photos? I don’t know if that makes sense, it does to me at least. It’s moving day tomorrow, but for now, sleep. Thanks for being here! Also – might I add that was very cool seeing Laurence up there, in Roubaix. Insane!
