Stephanie Gilmore, 2014 ASP World Champion

Na de meest intense kampioenschap wedstrijd in de historie van profesioneel golfsurfen voor vrouwen, weet de Australische Stephanie Gilmore de titel binnen te slepen. Stephanie Gilmore wint voor de zesde keer de ASP Womens World Championship Tour.

After failing to advance into the semifinals, Gilmore splashed the water. She knew that she would have to wait to see if she could still be crowned world champion.

Tyler Wright needed to win the Target Maui 2014 to send the title race to a three-heat surf-off. Wright reached the final, where she found an in-form Carissa Moore. The nerve-wracking heat was, in fact, involving more than a couple of surfers.

“This is definitely one of the best wins I’ve ever had. To have it here at home in front of my whole family means so much to me. I just wanted to have fun at this last event,” noted Moore.

“I just want to say that Tyler ‘you rip’, and congratulations to Steph on your sixth World Title. I’m more inspired than ever after surfing with all the girls this year. I have to give huge props to all girls; we’ve all pushed each other this year.”

Carissa ended up defeating the world title contender for the third time in a final, and handed Stephanie Gilmore her sixth ASP Women’s World Tour title.

“That was probably the most emotional I’ve ever been watching someone else surf in my life. I know how focused Tyler is, and I was completely prepared for a surf-off,” explains Gilmore.

“However, I also knew how incredibly capable Carissa is at virtually every venue. I won my first title here at Honolua Bay, but after my loss in the quarterfinals, I was prepared for anything to happen. I’m really emotional right now. This was the hardest title I’ve ever won.”
